On August 7, 2024, Cape Coral took a historic step toward its future as the City Council approved three major initiatives that promise to reshape the city’s landscape and set it on a path to sustainable growth and prosperity. These landmark developments include the acquisition of key properties and the approval of transformative projects that will redefine Cape Coral’s identity and appeal as a vibrant and thriving community.

Cape Coral Embraces Bold Developments to Drive Growth and Revitalization

In a strategic and forward-looking decision, the Cape Coral City Council approved the purchase and development of three significant sites. These include a nearly 19-acre acquisition in the Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) District, the purchase of the long-abandoned former golf course, and the green light for the Cape Coral Grove development in the city’s northwest. Together, these projects reflect a comprehensive effort to foster community engagement, attract new businesses, and enhance local amenities, positioning Cape Coral as a premier destination in Southwest Florida.

Revitalizing South Cape: Council Approves 19-Acre Purchase in CRA District

One of the cornerstone projects approved is the acquisition of 43 parcels, totaling nearly 19 acres, south of Cape Coral Parkway between Tarpon Court and Coronado Parkway. The approval of Resolution 235-24 signifies a substantial investment in the city’s vision for the South Cape area. This project aims to rejuvenate the community by creating a dynamic space that reflects the evolving needs and aspirations of Cape Coral's residents.

“We are committed to breathing new life into South Cape,” said Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter. “This purchase is not just about acquiring land; it’s about building a vibrant, connected community space that reflects the future of Cape Coral.”

The redevelopment will focus on enhancing walkability, creating public gathering spaces, and attracting diverse businesses, thereby driving economic growth and community cohesion.

Transforming the Former Golf Course: A Vision for Renewal

The Council also approved Resolution 260-24, authorizing the purchase of 175 acres along Palm Tree Boulevard north of Cape Coral Parkway. This site, a former golf course, has been a source of concern for the community since its closure in 2006. The redevelopment of this area represents a unique opportunity to turn an eyesore into a point of pride for Cape Coral.

“Today’s vote is a win for our entire community,” Mayor John Gunter stated. “By transforming this area, we are eliminating blight, creating new opportunities, and showcasing the strength and resilience of Cape Coral.”

Plans for the former golf course include a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational spaces that will cater to the needs of the local community and provide new avenues for economic activity.

Cape Coral Grove Development: A $1.3 Billion Economic Impact

Another major development approved by the City Council is the Cape Coral Grove project under Ordinance 64-24. Located on a 131-acre lot along Pine Island Road between Chiquita Boulevard and Burnt Store Road, this mixed-use development is set to have a monumental $1.3 billion economic impact on the city. The project includes retail spaces, entertainment venues, a hotel, and a range of luxury apartments and townhomes, positioning Cape Coral as a prime location for both residents and visitors.

The Cape Coral Grove development is a testament to our city’s commitment to partnering with forward-thinking developers,” said City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn. “This project will not only enhance the quality of life for our residents but will also attract new visitors and businesses, further solidifying Cape Coral as a dynamic and thriving community.”
