Proposal Made to Rename Jaycee Park: A New Chapter for a Cape Coral Landmark?

A fresh proposal has been put forward to rename Jaycee Park in Cape Coral, sparking conversations and mixed feelings among local residents. This change, unlike previous updates to the park, would not alter its appearance or impose new regulations. Instead, the proposal suggests renaming the beloved waterfront park to honor a notable figure in Cape Coral’s history: Roger Dean.

Roger Dean, an entrepreneur who opened Cape Coral's first car dealership, holds a special place in the community’s history. His daughter is spearheading this renaming initiative, hoping to keep his legacy alive for future generations. However, not everyone agrees with the idea, and many visitors seem content with the park’s current name.

For locals like Jessica Bernardo, who frequents Jaycee Park with her newborn, the park represents a peaceful haven in their daily lives. "We come every day, and actually, it’s like one of the only ways to sleep, so it’s helpful," Bernardo shared, highlighting the park's significance in her routine.

Jaycee Park: A Beloved Community Space

Nestled along the scenic waterfront in Cape Coral, Jaycee Park spans 11.8 acres and serves as a popular destination for families, children, and community events. The park features a playground, open green spaces, picnic areas, and stunning views of the Caloosahatchee River, making it a cherished gathering spot for both residents and visitors.

However, this week, a proposal to rename Jaycee Park to Roger Dean Park was officially submitted to the City of Cape Coral. The city has announced that the proposal meets all the necessary requirements for consideration, prompting discussions and debates within the community.

Community Reactions to the Proposed Name Change

Local news outlet WINK News interviewed several park visitors to gauge their reactions to the potential renaming, revealing a spectrum of opinions. Some, like Cape Coral resident Sean Patterson, expressed frustration and disbelief over the proposal. “What? Are you kidding me? I’m annoyed,” Patterson stated. “You know, there’s no point in getting angry because they do whatever they want to do… the government doesn’t care, and it’s just frustrating.”

On the other hand, Giedre Avellino, another park visitor, focused on preserving the park's atmosphere and the memories created there. "The trees, the spirits when you come here, the quietness… it’s beautiful for the children. I used to bring them when they were smaller," Avellino reminisced, emphasizing her emotional connection to the park.

Public Comment and Next Steps

The City of Cape Coral has opened a period for public comment, allowing residents to voice their opinions on the proposed name change. The public has until October 3 to submit written comments to the Parks and Recreation Director at City Hall. While the city has confirmed it rarely receives such proposals, officials have not made any formal statements regarding their stance on the matter at this time.

This proposed name change comes on the heels of recent developments and improvements at Jaycee Park. At the August 21, 2024 City Council meeting, the Council voted 6-2 to advance a public-private partnership proposal for the park. The approved agreement involves Fortress Secured, LLC handling the construction and The Reef Cape Coral, LLC managing food and beverage services. These partnerships aim to enhance visitor experience and expand amenities at Jaycee Park, making it a more attractive destination for locals and tourists alike.
