The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has clashed with Margaritaville on Fort Myers Beach over its lighting, citing concerns that the venue's bright TVs and fountain lights negatively impact sea turtles. The FWC's latest directives insist that Margaritaville must turn off these lights to protect the turtles that visit the area.
From the lobby of Pink Shell, the view might seem unremarkable, but behind the scenes, considerable efforts are made to safeguard the sea turtles. "We took additional measures by tinting all glass facing the beach to a 15% tint," explained Bill Waichulis, General Manager of Pink Shell. These efforts are crucial as the hotel typically sees around a dozen turtle nests each year. The lighting at Pink Shell adheres to strict turtle-friendly standards. Waichulis elaborated, "Even the TVs at the bar are turned off at nine o'clock, with those facing the beach switched off and the others shielded from view."
These practices are aligned with state regulations adopted by Fort Myers Beach, as detailed by environmental project manager Chadd Chustz. According to Chustz, "TVs emit short-wavelength blue, indigo, and violet light, which can cause disorientation to sea turtles." The FWC's 50-page report highlighted 51 lighting violations at Margaritaville, emphasizing the need for compliance with turtle protection standards.
Among the contentious issues are the four TVs at the 'License to Chill' bar. The FWC demands their removal, rather than just turning them off at 9 p.m., a move that has stirred significant debate. While Chustz and his team were not directly involved in the FWC's report on Margaritaville, he noted that "the sea turtle ordinance is effective from sunset to sunrise, with no restrictions during daylight hours."
Margaritaville has stated that they are committed to supporting marine and wildlife habitats but believes that the FWC's demands are excessive. They are currently collaborating with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and FWC to address the concerns.
