Lee County officials are moving forward with plans to enhance the Cape Coral Bridge and are inviting public input on the proposed changes. The project aims to tackle the growing traffic issues that have been a significant concern for local drivers.
Regular bridge user Kevin Croak, who lives in Southwest Cape Coral, shared his frustration with the current traffic situation. A recent trip that should have taken just 25 minutes turned into a lengthy ordeal due to congestion. "The traffic is horrendous. It's always backed up," Croak explained after leaving his home an hour and a half early for a car service appointment in Fort Myers.
For residents like Croak, there’s promising news: construction on the Cape Coral Bridge is scheduled to begin in 2027. The plan includes expanding the bridge to six lanes—three in each direction—along with 10-foot shoulders and a dedicated 10-foot pedestrian lane on both sides.
The Lee County Department of Transportation has assured the public that there will be no full closures or major traffic disruptions during the construction. The contractor will maintain four lanes of traffic throughout the project, and the additional shoulders will help facilitate smooth traffic flow.
As part of the project, two existing bridges will be demolished and replaced with newer, wider structures designed to improve traffic flow and safety. The enhancements will also include pedestrian and bike lanes, which have excited residents like Al Trent, who looks forward to safer walking and biking options.
To learn more about the Cape Coral Bridge improvement project, residents are encouraged to attend an open house at Florida Southwestern State College on Wednesday. For those unable to attend in person, a virtual option is available. More details can be found here.
